"Growing Younger": Literature and Childlike Faith

October 10-12, 2024

To commemorate the bicentenary of George MacDonald--the nineteenth-century Scottish novelist, fantasist, theologian, and poet--this conference will include papers pertaining to his life, work, and legacy. More broadly, we will hear papers that explore motifs of childlikeness, particularly as they relate to faith and imagination. While it is especially evident in his timeless children's stories, MacDonald’s interest in childlikeness pervades all his creative and theological output, resurfacing in his realistic fiction, essays, and elsewhere. Human hearts, he recommends, “should always be growing younger.”

The conference will include scholarly and creative panels, as well as a poetry workshop, keynote address, and poetry reading with Malcolm Guite. Registration includes admittance to all events, some meals, and a banquet dinner Friday evening following the keynote address (space limited to first 100 registrants).
