Sean McDaniel '91

sean mcdaniel speaking from podium

Sean graduated from Covenant College in 1991 with a major in interdisciplinary studies and concentrations in business, psychology, and sociology. Sean said that Covenant’s great soccer program and Christ-centered focus drew him to the college. He was  grateful for Coach Brian Crossman’s intentionality recruiting him from his Florida high school. Ashe reflected on his time at Covenant, Sean shared his gratitude for the deep friendships he formed. Many of his hallmates are still a meaningful part of his life. Looking back, Sean also appreciated that Covenant taught him the discipline of business through a holistic lens. Rather than solely focusing on data and numbers, Covenant business professors taught Sean how to view his work in the business world through the lens of relationship with other image bearers.

“You can get a degree at any college, but at Covenant you are taught how the Gospel is woven into all that we do and what a Biblical worldview is,” said Sean.

Sean’s lifelong passion for soccer and two decades of experience in the business world have collided in his current position as the manager of the Chattanooga Red Wolves. His work in the sports industry has revealed to him the importance of relationships. And, his formative years at Covenant taught him how to relate to people coming from different cultures and religions in a way that seeks to be caring and non-threatening but displays the gospel. Sean commented that the sports industry can be highly competitive and individualistic. Because of his education at Covenant, he learned that his presence and care for  the people around him can be a channel forGod's grace to enter into that extremely competitive, cutthroat environment.

When asked what advice he would give to a student pursuing a career in the sports industry, Sean shared that he would encourage students to get their foot in the door wherever they can. Once you get that foot in the door and begin networking new and exciting opportunities will present themselves. He also encourages students to focus on demonstrating the gospel in the relationships they create with others.

Sean’s perspective on how Christiansshould view their work came from his time at Covenant. There is a need to work in order to gain the financial stability necessary to support yourself and your family. However, Sean also emphasizes the need for believers to  see their workplace as an opportunity to share the gospel.Sean saw this idea modeled by his professors at Covenant who discipled him. They taught him that the gospel impacts every facet of his life, and this drives him to act, speak, and treat those around him in a way that glorifies Christ. In an environment that can be tense and competitive, Sean focuses on spreading the grace, peace, and mercy of Jesus Christ.
