Volunteers of the Year: Nathan ’10 & Jessica Jelgerhuis Newman ’08

Nathan and Jessica Newman live in Washington, DC, where they frequently open their home to Covenant alumni. Jess began working at The Heritage Foundation in May 2014 as Special Assistant to the Executive Vice President, Bret Bernhardt. Pres. Derek Halvorson recently spoke at Heritage on higher education and religious freedom, where the Newmans hosted a Washington, DC, alumni event later that evening with over seventy in attendance. Before joining Heritage, Jessica got her start in the final months of the Bush Administration working as Special Assistant to the White House Liaison and Scheduling and Advance in the immediate Office of the Secretary of Transportation. She most recently served as a senior staffer for Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) as the Director of Scheduling.

Nathan is completing his Master of Divinity at Reformed Theological Seminary’s Washington, DC, campus. He also serves as a pastoral intern at McLean Presbyterian Church and an officer in the United States Air Force Chaplain Corps. His most recent active duty tour was serving as the Protestant Chaplain Candidate at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) providing spiritual care, moral and ethical advice, and informal pastoral counseling to the 1169 basic cadet trainees this summer. Upon graduation from seminary in May 2017, Nathan will be ordained in the PCA. He previously served as a recruiter and fundraiser for Covenant for four years.
