Pre-Medical Studies

Pre-Medical Studies

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) recently updated their list of competencies that medical schools consider as essential for today's medical doctors. This list includes commitment to learning and growth, cultural awareness, compassion, ethical responsibility, interpersonal skills, adaptability, critical thinking, and service orientation along with the understanding of human and life sciences.

It is clear that medical schools are not just seeking students who are trained technicians but service-minded individuals of integrity who are developed as whole persons. Our emphases on theological and spiritual development, the liberal arts, and challenging coursework make Covenant an ideal environment for pre-medical education.

Program Overview

Covenant's pre-med advising track includes the whole educational experience: living in community, mentoring relationships with faculty, prayerful advising, and comprehensive curriculum. Demanding courses in a student's major are combined with an extensive set of core requirements that provide breadth beyond the chosen major and a rich context for studies in the major. Through this advising track, students will emerge from their studies energized and equipped to pursue callings in medicine.

Although a science major is not a pre-medical requirement, most pre-medical students major in a scientific discipline. The faculty members in the sciences have extensive research and teaching experience in their disciplines and are theologically committed to the belief that scientific study is not to be seen as an impediment to faith, substitute for faith, or area of human activity isolated from faith. For Christians, scientific study should emerge naturally from our commitment to the Creator and our faith in Him integral to our work.
