Sport Management Students Experience Daytona 500

Michaela Kourmoulis, assistant professor of sport management, connected three students with a hands-on learning experience in the world of sporting events and the business management side of athletics. She plans to continue finding ways for students in the program to attend and work events like this so they can catch a glimpse of life in sport management.

Through Professor Kourmoulis' connections, she provided students with the opportunity to work at the 2021 College Football National Championship. After an application and interview process, William Wallace '21, Olivia Sanders '22, and Kailey Burrell '21 were originally chosen. Unfortunately, the championship restricted attendance due to COVID-19 protocols. Professor Kourmoulis used additional connections to arrange the Daytona 500 opportunity. Due to the date change, Kailey wasn't able to attend the event, but Lydia Radmacher '23 took her place.

Having worked at Daytona before coming to Covenant, she was excited to introduce students to the fast-paced excitement of the racing event. The students worked with crowd control and realized how tiring long, adrenalin-filled days are. This hands-on experience will serve them well as they pursue careers in the sports industry.
