Resting Well: How Covenant Students Spend Free Time

While gaining an education is an important part of the Covenant experience, rich fellowship and life-giving connection happen long after classes are dismissed each day. Whether at a campus event, in a residence hall, or off campus, students creatively rest and recharge during their free time.

Events On-Campus
Throughout the week, there are numerous events and activities on campus to attend during a study break or evening off. Student-run clubs meet regularly, which provide many engaging opportunities to exercise public-speaking skills at debate club, network at a business club panel, or move your feet at swing dance club, just to name a few! At weekly diversity cafes or “dicafs” hosted by the Intercultural Program, students learn and engage with other cultures through crafts, snacks, and conversation. Several times each semester, there are theatre performances, concerts, and improv shows to attend and support fellow students. Intramural sports, which happen all school year, allow students at any skill level to compete in a fun and informal setting. Additionally, students engage in spiritual fellowship at a worship night hosted by the chapel department or weekly hall Bible study.

In the Residence Halls
Long after professors have gone home, students continue to converse and connect in their residence halls. Some roommates host tea parties for friends and neighbors, while others gather for movie nights or catch a recent episode of a favorite show. There are also regular events in each residence hall, from hall dates to building-wide activities. Oftentimes, students will gather in the commons or hallways to catch up and take a break. Students can be found baking in Mac kitchens, playing pingpong in Andreas lobby, having dance parties in Carter, or watching a movie in the Founders movie room. Another favorite Covenant tradition is sharing meals together. Whether in the Great Hall or on a fast-food run off the mountain, you can always expect Covenant students to be enjoying one another’s company over a meal.

Off-Campus Adventures
Students also love going off campus to explore Chattanooga. Outdoorsy students clear their heads by taking walks on the scenic Lookout Mountain hiking trails. Some also rock climb, whether in a gym on a local mountain! Others enjoy the music scene by attending concerts in Chattanooga or driving to a nearby city for a show. Students will stroll downtown near the river or visit the aquarium or art museum. Most are involved in local churches, and will attend small groups, Bible studies, and other events in addition to Sunday morning services. Many students love to spend a weekend afternoon thrifting, visiting a coffee shop, or stopping by an arts market. Chances are, if you can think of an activity, there’s a place to do it near Covenant. There’s plenty to explore in and around Chattanooga!
Covenant students take their studies seriously, but they also recognize that there is more to life than homework. From engaging events on campus, to life-giving fellowship in residence halls, to off campus adventures, there are plenty of ways students spend their free time.
