Professional Interests

I teach in the areas of Biblical Studies (primarily Old Testament) and Missions. My specific area of research has been on the Balaam narratives of Numbers 22-24. My experience as a practicing lawyer has given me a strong interest in the area of Old Testament ethics, while my service as a missionary with Mission to the World in East and South Africa has led to a strong interest in what the Old Testament has to say about the theology of mission. I am also very interested in the study and praxis of cross-cultural ministry in the world today, particularly within the Muslim world.

Courses regularly taught: Old Testament Introduction; New Testament Introduction; Prophets of Israel; Deuteronomy (Old Testament Ethics); Outreach to Contemporary Culture (Apologetics); Theology of Mission; and Missionary Methods and Problems.

Personal Interests

I am married to Kathleen Decker Ward, and we have two adult children, Laura '05 and David '07, and one daughter-in-law, David's wife Katie Bell Ward '08. (We also have two Labrador retrievers that came with us from our missionary service in South Africa.) I enjoy reading, hiking in the mountains, and playing chess.

Covenant Activities

I serve as adviser to the Mu Kappa ("missionary kid") Club, work with diversity students generally, and serve on the Faculty Multi-cultural committee.
