Emmie Thompson
Visiting Assistant Professor of Theological Studies
Biblical & Theological Studies
On Faculty Since 2024
The Biblical and Theological Studies program partnered with the liberal arts approach and robust hall life of Covenant College make for an inevitably holistic, transformational education. Here are a few of my top reasons for studying BTS at Covenant:
First is the combination of the excellence, character, and humility of the professors. I know this firsthand; I had most of them as professors. They care about you as a whole person, not just as an academic student. Second is the way the BTS department interacts with a variety of literature and voices, crossing historical, geographical, cultural, and even disciplinary boundaries. We strive to do this both critically and charitably in humility. Biblical and Theological Studies (as with all disciplines) is meant to be done in community. Thirdly and most ultimately, is the subject himself. We get to spend our time learning and talking about the Triune God. Life’s biggest questions - our source and end, our deepest longings - are being explored in the work of Biblical and Theological studies. Our disciplined study of God’s Word and His work in and through people (people just like us) throughout history is not just about attaining and furthering knowledge, but about being transformed together by the One whom we gaze at. And as we are transformed, we get to participate and share in the ongoing kingdom work of loving God and neighbor, humbly led by God’s Word and Spirit. We engage in this (fun) work together, seeking to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God - in his church, in academia, and throughout the world.
