Covenant College Appoints Two New Vice Presidents

President Derek Halvorson recently announced that he appointed Jonathan Fitzpatrick as the new vice president for admissions and marketing. He officially filled the role in June 2018. Jonathan Fitzpatrick is a graduate of Grove City College and holds an MBA in marketing from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. He has 17 years of experience in corporate marketing, including a role with World magazine at the outset of his career, brand management for Heinz, and marketing management for Land O’Lakes. In addition to Jonathan’s outstanding marketing background, he has distinguished himself as an excellent builder and leader of cross-functional teams.

Jonathan, his wife Emily, and their four children recently relocated to North Georgia from Parsippany, NJ. When they lived in St. Paul, Minnesota, Jonathan served as a deacon in their Orthodox Presbyterian church.

“Jon's training and experiences in marketing, his track record of successful team-building and achievement of results, and his understanding of and enthusiasm for robust, biblically-grounded education that permeates every dimension of students’ lives make him an ideal candidate to take on the role of VP for admissions and marketing,” said President Halvorson.

Additionally, President Halvorson has appointed Fred Verwoerd as the vice president for operations and finance. Fred has served for the last 19 months as the interim president of Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ontario. Prior to that, Fred served for five-and-a-half years as Redeemer's vice president of administration and finance, in which role he oversaw the very same aspects that fall under the purview of the vice president for operations and finance at Covenant College. Before working in the higher education sector, Fred served as the business manager for the largest independent public accounting firm in the Durham Region of Ontario, and before that he owned and operated two businesses of his own. Fred has served as the board chair for the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools and as a member of the board of Christian Schools Canada.

He earned his undergraduate degree in business administration from Dordt College and holds a CPA designation. Fred is married to Amy, and they have four grown children and two grandchildren. The Verwoerds are currently members of Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Hamilton, Ontario.

“Fred's experience in leading the operational and finance functions of a similar institution, his prior experiences in the for-profit business world, his commitment to transparency and teamwork, and his enthusiasm for Christian higher education make him extremely well-suited for the role of VP for operations and finance,” said President Halvorson.

Fitzpatrick and Verwoerd will serve on the Covenant College Cabinet. In addition to the president, the Cabinet now consists of:

Jen Allen, director of administration for the Office of the President

Marc Erickson, interim VP for development

Jonathan Fitzpatrick, VP for admissions and marketing

Jeff Hall, VP for academic affairs

Grant Lowe, chaplain

Karen Nelson, director of institutional research
