Dr. Rebecca Pennington Takes on Additional Role as Dean of Social Science

Covenant College is excited to officially welcome Dr. Rebecca E. Pennington ’82 to the role of Dean of Social Science. She took up this position at the beginning of the Spring 2019 semester, and has already begun work on multiple projects within her unit. Dr. Pennington is continuing some of her previous work in curriculum, core, and assessments in addition to her new position as dean.

Dr. Jeff Hall, the vice president for academic affairs at Covenant, wrote, “I am excited to have [Dr. Pennington] serving as a dean, and I believe she will bring prudent leadership to her position. She is thoughtful in her work and cares deeply for her colleagues.”

Dr. Pennington earned her BA and masters of education at Covenant College and a doctorate in education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Her 37 years of education experience includes teaching grades 2-8, instructing ESL classes, working as a curriculum specialist, becoming a professor at Covenant, and, now, assuming the role of Dean of Social Science at the College. Her professional interests include literacy across the curriculum, assessment, and college-level instructional design. She loves reading a variety of children’s literature and promoting literacy for all students.

She wrote that what she most looks forward to in her new role is “supporting fellow social science professors in their pursuit of Covenant’s mission. I am energized by my colleagues and their creative ideas that lead to human flourishing as they make the lordship of Christ visible in order to solve difficult problems in a complex world.”

The previous Dean of Social Science, Dr. Steve Kaufmann, spent significant time last semester with Dr. Pennington in order to make the transition smooth as he retired and passed the role on to her.
