COVID-19: Gym Reopening Plan

Colleagues,

As we prepare for students to return, the gym will reopen on the first day of classes, August 19 at 6 am. Usually, we would have the gym open prior to orientation, but this year we are implementing a number of new policies which are outlined below.  Additionally, in an effort to encourage outdoor activities, the concrete pad behind the Kirk has been cleared and a new basketball goal will be set up soon.

Thanks for your help as we seek to implement these changes for the benefit of everyone.

  • Access will be limited to only students and employees for at least the fall semester (no family members, or community members)

  • Those who enter the gym will need to sign in with the facility supervisor on duty, and be subject to a temperature check

  • During peak hours of 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm, college employees will not be granted access as we seek to allow maximum student access during that time

  • The gym will close 11:00 am -1:30 pm to allow additional time to clean restrooms and disinfect high use areas throughout the facility. Additionally, the gym will close at 10 PM to allow additional time to ensure the facility is properly sanitized in preparation for the following morning.

  • The capacity in each room will be limited to no more than 10 at a time, along with usage of no more than 30 minutes at a time per person to allow for social distancing.

  • Each court on Ashe gym floor will be limited to 10 people on the court at a time, with a time limit of 50 minutes per court for the same reason. Anyone on Ashe gym floor who is not on a court must remain socially distanced from other individuals who are not on the court.

  • The overall capacity of Ashe gym floor will be limited to 50 people

  • Specifically for playing basketball, participants must wear masks and limit games to 3 v 3 half court if they are actually playing. If simply shooting around or doing anything that allows for the recommended 6 feet of social distancing, masks do not have to be worn

  • Gym access will be first-come, first serve. Facility Supervisors will screen people as they enter, and monitor capacity in each room. If our workout areas are at full capacity, folks will be asked to remain outside until space is available

  • Masks are required in the facility, in accordance with the college policy

  • Intramurals will be adjusted to non-contact sports that can be played outside. Team sports will be limited to 10 people per roster
