COVID-19 Update - Concerning Trajectory

Covenant Community,
In the past week, we have exceeded the total number of cases we had all last semester, and seven of those cases have come in the past few days.  If this concerning trajectory continues, we will need to make some changes to our protocols.  We all hoped that this semester was going to be different and had planned accordingly.  However, this number of cases in such a short amount of time has stretched resources to the limit and taxed the individuals charged with responding and providing care.
This matches what we are seeing locally in Chattanooga as well as in NW Georgia where the surge is being felt across the state.  We expected some cases to begin the year due to the high number of visitors to campus during Orientation and the return of students from around the world.  Coupled with the dramatic rise of cases across the South, we thought it wise to implement masking in large indoor gatherings to begin the year.
Depending on how numbers look this Friday, we may implement additional restrictions in order to weather this latest increase in numbers on campus.  In the meantime, you can help even now by correctly wearing your masks where they are required, moving as many gatherings outdoors as possible, practicing caution in your behaviors when going off campus, and being mindful of your number of close contacts.  If you are placed in quarantine, please take it seriously and avoid others.  We have seen a larger percentage of quarantined students test positive this semester than we did last year.
If changes are necessary, we hope they are needed only for a short amount of time in the grand scheme of an academic year.  We hope to navigate this initial surge and see cases begin to decline here and in the surrounding areas in the coming weeks so that we can again modify restrictions.
