COVID-19 Weekly Update - week ending 8/27/21
Covenant Community: Welcome back to the weekly update. For those new to Covenant,
I will report each week on current COVID-19 case counts (those who have tested positive)
and quarantine numbers (those named as close contacts to someone who has tested positive).
As it was last year, it remains so this year as we get this big cruise ship underway
- fighting the spread of COVID-19 on this campus is a communal activity. Our actions
have impacts beyond ourselves. My rights, my life, my comforts are deferred for the
greater good of our lives, our community, our semester together.
Due to the residential nature of our community and the current conditions around us, we should all take personal responsibility for our behaviors on and off
campus. Many of these are familiar to us and will be addressed in future updates.
With a highly transmissible disease, your extra care (masking where required, immediately reporting to health services or the RD on Duty
if ill or identified as a close contact, and following through with quarantine expectations) will go a long way towards prolonging our semester with limited restrictions.
So please be careful. Even without the same restrictions required as last year, we
are a significant outbreak away from imposing more measures in order to safeguard
the semester. This report about Cedarville University and the rapid spread on that campus is a cautionary tale - as is this one at Liberty University. It can happen so quickly in a residential community. In the event of a significant
outbreak we could move to masks required indoors everywhere, no open halls, outdoor
chapels, and online classes in distanced classrooms for a few weeks to get transmission
under control.
As stated previously, we will have a vaccine clinic on campus from 1-4p on Thursday,
September 9. The Dade County Health Department will be giving the FDA-approved Pfizer
vaccine. The clinic for the second shot will be three weeks later on September 30.
The vaccine remains one of the best ways to reduce transmission and serious illness.
If you would prefer to get vaccinated earlier, you can visit the Vaccine Finder website to find locations near you.
Our data this semester is established on a baseline of 10 days before the first day
of class - August 16. The quarantine numbers are lower than expected for the case
counts because a majority of these cases were identified prior to arrival as part
of the requirements for entry to campus. Quarantine numbers are also lower this year
due to the number of students who are vaccinated. Remember, vaccinated students who
are asymptomatic do not have to quarantine per the department of public health guidelines.
