POSITION SUMMARY
The Landscape Maintenance Groundskeeper is responsible to the Campus Grounds Supervisor for general campus landscaping, lawn care, and seasonal maintenance needs. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist in maintaining campus turf and out-of-bound areas of the athletic fields, including but not limited to: mowing, trimming, edging, cleaning up debris, spraying, etc
  • Assist in maintaining campus and athletic field irrigation systems
  • Assist in maintaining landscape beds - weeding, planting, mulching, etc.
  • Assist in maintaining campus trails by clearing fallen trees, cutting back foliage, re-cutting and dragging trails, repairing damaged areas for safety
  • Assist in maintaining campus woodline areas with attention to remove undesired underbrush and invasive vines
  • Assist with regular repairs of areas around campus and athletic fields in response to stormwater conditions and improve stormwater runoff with attention to clearing catch basins and identifying areas for improvements
  • Assist in keeping hardscapes, parking lots, and athletic surfaces blown off and clear of debris, helping to specifically ensure that the campus front-door areas remain looking neat and clear
  • Provide support as needed to apply pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, and fungicides to turf and ornamental plantings
  • Develop a broader understanding of turf and plant health issues watching for long term care issues as they relate to campus wide issues (i.e. diseases, erosion, pests, etc.)
  • Assist in maintaining and repairing landscape structures on and around athletic fields and campus, as well as assisting with special landscape and turf projects around campus
  • Responsible to safely operate all equipment, which may include tractor, backhoe, and other related equipment, performing weekly maintenance on equipment as directed
  • Assist in training, managing, and motivating work study student labor in all work practices and safety matters
  • Assist in ensuring that the shop work area and work sites around campus are kept in a safe and orderly manner. Ensure the use of personal protection equipment and proper safety procedures
  • Utilize the electronic work request and preventive maintenance systems by creating new requests as needed, assigning requests, checking for assigned requests, completing assignments, and logging work completed with all appropriate information
  • Respond to campus seasonal needs, such as leaf, debris, and winter clearing needs, etc.
  • Be on call for safety and emergency response efforts in the event of storms throughout the year particularly winter storms
  • Work as a team player with Grounds Department staff in accomplishing all department priorities across campus
  • Perform all other duties and projects as assigned

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High School Education
  • Two years of work experience in turf/landscape maintenance or related field 
  • Proficiency with Google Apps or Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must have a valid US Driver's License

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in turf grass or horticulture related fields is a plus
  • Knowledge of irrigation system maintenance and general equipment maintenance

 PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Standing and walking for the majority of the day  
  • Stooping and squatting periodically 
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs. regularly
  • Sitting periodically

This job is physically demanding and requires: Standing, walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, balancing, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, operating, proper body mechanics, mechanical rolling accommodation; environmental conditions: wet, humid, hot, cold, noise, and vibration. Must be able to safely work in potentially hazardous situations/environments involving power equipment, chemicals, solvents, vapors, heights, ladders, platforms; have sufficient hearing to work safely and cooperatively
