Maclellan Scholars Class Trips
Class of 2016 | China
In May of 2013, our Mac class went to Beijing and Shanghai, China. We were in Beijing
for ten days and Shanghai for four days. During our time in Beijing, we got to experience
many different aspects of Chinese culture including trying different foods, visiting
historical sites, and riding on the extremely crowded subway every day. We also went
to went to an orphanage just outside of Beijing for a few days. This was a private
facility that housed and took care of kids that the government orphanages wouldn’t
take. Many of them had some sort of mental or physical deformity. We stayed there
for a few days and hung out with the kids and did some grounds work for them. For
the last part of the trip, we went to Shanghai for four days. While there, we were
guided around by a missionary couple who took us to different historical sites and
also gave us more insights into the Christian church in China.

Class of 2017 | Turkey
In May of 2014, the Mac Scholars freshman class took a trip to Turkey. Our group spent
one week exploring the sights, history, and religions of Istanbul, one of the oldest
cities in modern history. We had the privilege of worshipping with a local church
and spending time with the pastor and various members of the congregation throughout
the week as we toured the city and visited various cultural and religious centers.
Trips to various mosques and conversations with local Muslim leaders were events that
stuck out to many members of the group as informative and eyeopening. During the
second week of the trip, our group traveled to Cappadocia, where we visited early
church sites and ancient homes carved out of the sandstone walls. Later in the week,
we flew to the area that contains the ancient town of Ephesus, where we toured sights
mentioned in Scripture and also got a firsthand look at local culture, including the
making of Turkish rugs.

Class of 2018 | South Asia
In May of 2015, the freshman Maclellan Scholars traveled to South Asia. While there,
we learned firsthand about slum industries, consumer markets, urban churches, rural
churches, justice interventions, other religions, spiritual meditations, government
operations, cultural taboos, core values, family communities, life expectations, and
so much more. Moments of growth occurred during planned activities but also on bus
rides, restaurant conversations, and shopping excursions. As our senses were invigorated
by foreign sights, smells, and tastes, our minds and hearts were enlivened with questions
and ideas. With each temple visit or monument tour, we found ourselves asking better
questions and probing deeper beneath the surface of people, places, religions, and
cultures. We left South Asia feeling like we had learned so much and want to learn
so much more.
