Student Profile: Kelsey Mathis '16
Residence Hall and Floor
Favorite place on campus
The hiking trails are great any time of year, but I especially love when they are covered in snow.
Honors received at Covenant
Why did you choose Covenant?
I could tell from my first visit that Covenant really lives out its motto, “In all things Christ preeminent,” in everything from academics to athletics. I was excited to receive a well-rounded liberal arts education steeped in a strong Christian worldview.
How is Covenant unique?
It’s absolutely beautiful, and there are actually four seasons! (Yes, that was new to me.) The students here really strive to grow stronger in their faith, supporting and challenging each other, so I love the diverse hall life—it’s not everywhere that you get to live surrounded by good friends and really grow together throughout the year.
What has been your favorite experience at Covenant?
Playing volleyball, complete with bonding with my teammates in hotels and on the bus.
What is your favorite class so far?
Introduction to Linguistics with Dr. Nola Stephens
What made that class your favorite?
Dr. Stephens brings so much excitement to this subject. The variation in language is a testament to the diversity of God’s people.
What are some things you enjoy about your major(s)?
I love that the professors really care about what they teach. I don’t think anyone can make accounting as entertaining as Professor Dodson can, and Dr. Quatro lives out what he teaches in that he truly invests in his students both personally and professionally. From day one, the professors have emphasized the goodness of business, and that God can really use it for his glory. I just get so excited whenever I think about stewarding the earth in this way.
What person at Covenant has had the greatest impact on you, and why?
I’m so thankful for my roommate, Eliza Cary, and for the fact that I’ll be living with my freshman roommate through the end of my senior year. She is laid back, caring, and just excited about life. She has helped me find the fun in the little things. As she would say, party party!
What’s your favorite part of the day at Covenant?
Sunday afternoons, when everyone is relaxing.
What are your post-graduation plans?
I would love to open a pie shop that also serves top-quality coffee. Growing up in Houston, with its vibrant restaurant industry, I’ve developed a passion for unique dining experiences. My desire is for people to delight in the delicious flavors of God’s creation. Pie is beautiful!
How is Covenant equipping you for the future?
The rigorous academics take me outside of my comfort zone, helping me overcome weaknesses.
