Student Profile: Emma Beers '14
Theory and Composition
Residence Hall and Floor (for 2011-2012):
Writing music, playing music, and working in The Blink.
Favorite place on campus:
Chapel – lower level: music department.
Honors received at Covenant:
Why did you choose Covenant?
Although having three siblings who had already attended Covenant did weigh into my decision, it was the idea of a strong community and vigorous academics that actually made me really consider Covenant. I’m a transfer student and while my previous college had a larger music program, I know that the teachers here are extremely dedicated to making up for any differences in size and that the community and the spiritual guidance of the school was irreplaceable.
How is Covenant unique?
Most Christian colleges I’ve visited seem to babysit the students instead of allowing them to live in an environment that encourages growth and experience for application outside of college life. I think Covenant staff and professors encourage independent thought that I believe really impacts your worldview in a practical way.
What has been your favorite experience at Covenant?
I don’t know if a whole semester can count as a favorite experience but my first semester was such an amazing time. I developed great friendships with people that are genuinely like brothers and sisters to me now as well as really thriving in the education I was given and growing in my relationship with Christ.
What is your favorite class, and why?
“Advanced Concepts in Musical Structure” with Dr. Kreuze. This class is why I started in my major and I look forward to it every week.
What person at Covenant has had the greatest impact on you, and why?
All of the teachers in the music department have already had such a huge impact on my musical experience. Dr. Kreuze and Mr. Kim have definitely been the most influential, though. I’ve taken classes with both of them every semester and they’ve opened my eyes to all that is actually involved in music.
What's your favorite part of the day at Covenant?
I like nights when I don’t have work and I just have time to study, relax, or find a coffee shop to chill at with friends.
What are your post-graduation plans?
I’m planning on getting my master’s and doctorate before hopefully ending up as a teacher in a community college. I really think it’s important to have solid education in community colleges and state schools as well as private schools and I hope to able to help provide that.
How is Covenant equipping you for the future?
Probably most essential in my decision to come here was the faith integration that is so strong at Covenant. I fully realize that there won’t be another opportunity to learn and fellowship with so many strong Christians and I know I really want that strong foundation as I start an independent life.
