Master of Arts in Teaching Program Approved by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools

Covenant’s new master of arts in teaching (MAT) program has received approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). "We approve the master of arts in teaching degree program,” wrote SACS president Belle Wheelan, “and wish you and your colleagues much success with it.”

"This is exciting news for us," said Prof. Rebecca Dodson, associate dean of the master of education program, who has been working with the MAT committee in the education department. "The last step now is for approval from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission in March during their on-site visit." Interested students should consult the MAT website early in 2011 for application and financial aid details. The MAT program will begin offering classes in June, 2011.

"My favorite class so far has definitely been T.I.P.S. (Teaching In a Pluralistic Society)...It was such a hard semester enduring the readings, projects, and papers for that class, but through homework, the lectures, and the challenging discussions, I learned so much about how to be diversity-minded while teaching. Though the class is focused on educating children, the topics that were raised really encouraged me to broaden my worldview and place aside hidden biases within myself. "
