The Covenant College theatre and music departments will present the children’s musical Honk! on March 27, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanderson Auditorium at Covenant College. Honk! brings Hans Christian Anderson’s The Ugly Duckling to life through song and dance, creating a show appropriate for all ages.
“I am thrilled we discovered this musical,” said Deborah Kirby, associate professor of theatre. “It is a marvelous reinterpretation of the lesson that we should love how we were created, no matter our appearance.”
Under the direction of Deborah Kirby, Honk! features Covenant student actors as well as child actors from surrounding communities. Honk! is the first children’s musical put on by Covenant’s theatre department, and requires the actors involved to explore new territory. From playing animals, to working with younger children, the play offers students the chance to develop a wider range of acting skills.
The musical side of Honk! includes more than typical Broadway numbers. Audience members will enjoy the rhumba, jazz, the tango, and rock music during the show.
“It is such an encouragement to see the theatre department growing and trying new styles of theatre,” said Jamison Shimmel, who plays the Ugly Duckling. “What I love most about the show is the challenge for us to play animals. Honk! is an incredibly fun show and the cast is working hard to create quality theatre.”
Honk! will open with a preview performance on March 27, at 7:30 p.m. for a discounted ticket price of $7 for adults; $4 for students, staff, faculty, and seniors; and $1 for children.
The show will run March 28, 29, April 3, and 4 at 7:00 p.m., with a final performance on April 5, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased by calling 706.419.1051 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
