Covenant College's golf team went where it had never gone before in Rutledge, GA, on March 17 when the team shot a team record 297 at the Creek at Hard Labor State Park.
Birmingham Southern led the 11-team event with a first-day score of 289.
Freshman Dave Wilkinson led the Scots with a personal best 68 and was two strokes back of Birmingham Southern's Ryan Falgout’s 66. Senior and older brother Jon Wilkinson followed with a 74, Michael Dinwiddie fired a 77, and David Spencer closed out the scoring with a 78. Trevor Potts was one shot out of the team scoring with a 79.
The younger Wilkinson rattled off 7 birdies, 6 of them coming in a ten-hole stretch from holes 4 through 13. "A lot of things went right today," said the freshman from St. Louis. "I chipped in for birdie on 13, made a bomb on #4 that jumped an inch into the air before landing in the cup and had a couple other good putts fall for me. I hope I can keep it going tomorrow and finish it."
Coach Schreiner was surprised there were not better scores on the vulnerable state park course. "I am excited that our first tournament score under 300 comes against a quality field and puts us in contention with nationally ranked teams, but I am a bit surprised that the scores were not better with the perfect conditions,” remarked coach Tom Schreiner.
The Scots got stellar play on the back nine shooting a combined one under but everyone with the exception of Dave Wilkinson struggled on the front. “We will need to have our third and fourth seeded players shaving 3 or 4 strokes off tomorrow if we are going to have a legitimate shot at Birmingham,” said coach Schreiner.
