Covenant College's Musical Theatre Club presents the Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie in the Dora Maclellan Brown Memorial Chapel at 7:00 pm on April 2, 3, and 4, 2009.
Tickets are $5 for students and children, $10 for Covenant College faculty and staff, and $15 for adults. Tickets may be purchased by calling 706.419.1453 or 706.419.1428 or at the door beginning at 6:15 pm each evening of the performances.
Bye Bye Birdie tells the story of a rock-and-roll singer, Conrad Birdie, who is about to be inducted into the army and decides to give one last kiss to a girl randomly chosen from his fan club. A satire of 1950s American society, the musical includes the numbers "Hymn for a Sunday Evening," "A Lot of Livin' To Do," and "Put on a Happy Face," among others.
More than 100 students are involved in the production of Bye Bye Birdie, Covenant's fifth production of a Broadway musical. Performances include a cast of over 25 students, under the direction of Monica Woodlief, and the Covenant Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Robyn Wilkes.
The cast includes main characters Wes Simonds (Birdie), Ellie Novenson (Kim), Asher Payne (Albert), Laura Childers (Rosie), Julie Drexler (Mrs. Macafee), Jon Vanderhart (Mr. Macafee), and Hannah Joseph (Mrs. Peterson), and many others in supporting roles.
This year's production has an imaginative and creative crew, including set designer Brian Woodlief, set builder Aaron Caldwell, musical coach Tatiana Trevor, and choreographer Barry VanCura (Ballet Tennessee). The show is funded by Covenant College's Student Senate and produced under the direction of Dr. Jeanell Brown, advisor for the Musical Theatre Club.
