Theatre: On the Verge
The Covenant College Theatre Department presents On the Verge or The Geography of Yearning, a play by Eric Overmyer. Opening February 13, 2014, the story follows three female Victorian explorers traveling through Terra Incognita (and, eventually, through time). Along the way, the troupe encounters a yeti, a cannibal with a German accent, and many more unusual characters. Overmyer’s work extends off the live stage—he has written for numerous TV shows including Homicide, Law & Order, The Wire, and New Amsterdam. Student actors will present On the Verge under the direction of Camille Hallstrom, professor of theatre at Covenant.
“I’m really excited to see how audiences are going to react to certain things we’ll do onstage,” said Kacy Polk, who plays the role of Mary Baltimore. “The situations our characters find themselves in are so funny that we can’t help but laugh while we rehearse them!”
The play features Victorian dialogue and language, providing an extra challenge for the actors involved in the show.
“We all adhere to a more sophisticated language,” said Polk. “There are so many words and phrases that aren't normally used today, so we have to make sure the audience understands.”
On the Verge will open with a preview performance on February 13, at 8:00 p.m. Tickets for the preview performance are discounted at $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. The show will run February 14, 15, and 21, at 8:00 p.m. with a final performance on February 22, at 2:30 p.m.
